Ever stop and think about how many calories you’re drinking a day? I didn’t take my liquid calorie intake seriously until I got on my new eating plan. I used to drink soda like it was the last good thing on earth until I found out how many calories were in my favorite soda. There’s 146 calories in a 12oz serving of my favorite soda and I packed in those calories to every time I drank one. I had at least a 12oz serving twice a day which totaled 292 calories a day! I drank this soda 5 days a week adding 1460 calories to my waist line! Needless to say, I stopped drinking that soda. I thought the smart thing to do was switch to the diet soda, but it had a higher sodium content and that meant added water weight for my body type.
I was also a big beer drinker. Yes I’m one of the few women in the world who actually likes the taste of beer or a good ale or lager. Then I found out that 12oz of my favorite beer was costing me 171 calories per serving. Now although I don’t have the body type to have a “beer belly” drinking beer increased the visceral fat in my abdomen. Visceral fat is the fat that is packed between your internal organs. It’s also known as organ fat or intra-abdominal fat. I really enjoyed drinking beer, but I had to give it up so I could lose weight.
Knowing that I enjoyed relaxing at the end of a hard day with an alcoholic beverage, I tried to switch to drinking wine. Well, there are more empty calories there too. My wine flavor of choice was any white wine or moscato. Well the white wine packed on an extra 96 calories for a 5oz glass and the moscato added 127 calories for every 5oz I drank. Red wine is about 102 calories per 5oz glass. So now what do I do?
Researchers at John Hopkins did a study of liquid calories vs. solid calories and they found that reducing the intake of liquids that are sweetened with sugar or high fructose corn syrup caused the participants to lose a larger amount of weight than the ones who cut back on solid food. The researchers believe that this weight loss occurred because liquids are not as satisfying as solid food and this may cause different metabolic responses in the body. This is because liquids don’t suppress hunger like solid food does and some can cause you to eat more until you are satisfied. Ever eat a burger, chase it with a soda which causes you to burp giving you room to finish off the fries? I’ve done that before.
Well I switched to drinking water at every meal. Water has zero calories and it can actually make you feel full faster thus reducing your food intake. Try replacing soda or whatever sugary drink you like with a glass of water at just one of your meals and see how much weight you’ll lose.
