Most Powerful Pepper Sprays

Pepper sprays are the most widely used self-defense product in the world. Part of the reason for that is because they are effective and cheap. They have been around for thousands of years ever since the Chinese threw bags of hot spices at their enemies.

There isn’t a police officer in the country that doesn’t have some kind of defensive spray on his utility belt. Postal carriers all over the country carry it as a deterrent against dog attacks. To me those are two pretty powerful endorsements.

Pepper sprays use a by-product of cayenne pepper, the hottest in the world. Oleoresin capsicum, or OC for short, swells the membranes inside the nose making breathing difficult. It also swells the veins of the eyes causing the eyes to close. There can be tearing, coughing, choking and considerable pain.

The usual concentration of oleoresin capsicum is 10 percent. A common measure of hotness is called Scoville Heat Units (SHU). Most sprays are in the 2 million SHU range.

Wildfire OC spray is rated at 3 million SHU’s which is law enforcement strength making it the most powerful pepper spray available.

Most sprays are small so the amount of OC in them is limited. Thus their capabilities are limited. Most pepper sprays have a range of 6 to 10 feet. Some can be as high as 18 feet like pepper gel.

The Mace pepper gun uses a different type of disbursing method and has a range of 25 feet. Some wildfire pepper sprays have a range of 20 feet. Mace bear spray has a range of 30 feet.

Those are the most powerful pepper sprays.
